You’re knee deep into wedding planning and are now trying to decide what you will want your wedding photography to look like. You’re looking for a wedding photographer who’s images will tell the story of your day and will stand the test of time. When looking for a wedding photographer it’s so important to find someone who is going to mesh with your personality as a couple and will deliver a high quality experience and gallery to look back on for years to come! In this blog I’ll suggest 20 questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking them for your special day!
1. Is my wedding date available?
This may be an obvious question to ask a wedding photographer but sometimes this is left out when inquiring. Even if you are in the planning phase a rough time frame should be given to the wedding photographer you are inquiring with.
2. How far in advance do you require bookings?
Some wedding photographers require you to book a year or more in advance intentionally because their calendars fill quickly. Some wedding photographers keep their books open year round to be open to new opportunities and some cap their year at a certain amount of weddings and sessions.
3. How many weddings have you photographed?
Find out if your photographer has experience is so important. This is your wedding day and you’ll most likely be looking for an experienced professional in your wedding budget to capture your day. If they have only photographed one wedding you may want to find someone who is more experienced.
4. Can you share a full gallery of a recent wedding you have shot?
This is a good question to ask your photographer and they should 100% be willing to supply it. An experienced wedding photographer should have no problem showing you a few full galleries of their wedding days photographed. You can see how many photos you get, how they’re organized, and make sure the editing style is cohesive.
5. Can you provide references of client testimonials?
Another great question to ask your photographer is if they have reviews from past wedding clients. A photographer with several five star reviews is a good sign that they can be trusted. You can also tell in reading the reviews what the experience is like when working with your wedding photographer.
6. Can you help us with our wedding timeline?
A lot of my couples are not sure how to go about planning the timeline for their wedding day so I always take the initiative to send them a questionnaire so I can help build the timeline for their special day. If a photographer says they can help you with this it’s a sign they are experienced and want to make sure that your day flows smoothly.
7. How do you backup our photos?
An experienced wedding photographer will produce several copies of your images to make sure none are lost. I am a New Hampshire wedding photographer and I shoot with two double card slot camera bodies, all raw images are backed up to two hard drives and the sd cards are never cleaned until the final gallery is delivered. It’s so important that you ask how your images are stored so you can have piece of mind.
8. How many wedding photos can we expect to receive?
It varies from photographer to photographer but you’ll want to know how many images on average you will receive when your wedding gallery is delivered. For an 8 hour wedding day my clients can expect 700+ images in their final gallery. (Huge emphasis on +)
9. What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
This is a fun question in 20 questions to ask your wedding photographer and it’s different for every photographer! I personally love your couples portraits especially if we get golden hour because of that glow! My second favorite part of the day is when the dance floor opens. Candids of you and your partner having a great time together with your guests is so much fun to capture!
10. Can we change our photography package?
It is important to know if your photographer has any flexibility in their packages once booked. Some have an additional hourly coverage rate and the ability to add on an engagement session or coverage for your rehearsal dinner if necessary. Personally I offer all of these as an option, because wedding timelines change!
11. Can we add a second shooter?
Photographers often have the option to add a second shooter to get more angles of your day! They may allow you to add it later on if it’s something you decide you would like or some may be included in standard wedding packages.
12. Do you shoot from a shot list?
This is important to ask because some photographers shoot from a very structured shot list or they are laid back. A photographer should have a timeline of events and at least a family shot list. Sometimes documentary style wedding photographers like myself don’t want too much of structure because they are trying to capture as many candid moments as possible throughout your wedding day.
13. How would you describe your working style?
The way a photographer presents themselves while working typically reflects their personality and whether they are an introvert or an extrovert. You want when selecting your wedding photographer to find someone you vibe with and decide whether you want them to take charge or be more laid back.
14. Can you describe how you work with other wedding vendors on the day of?
It’s so important that your photographer has worked with other wedding vendors, and does it well. We all are working together as a team to make your day as wonderful as possible and they should be able to work with others well especially in higher stress situations on your wedding day.
15. Have you worked at our venue before?
Although it is nice when your wedding photographer has been to your chosen venue it isn’t a complete deal breaker. Photographers love going to new venues to shoot, and if they have experience they should be comfortable adapting to a new venue they have never shot at before.
16. How do you approach posing for couples portraits?
Some photographers are more about easy posing while others help make your wedding images feel more candid and in the moment. Personally, I am all about movement when it comes to your wedding portraits. Of course we will have some images of you simply smiling at the camera, but walking together, laughing together, and creating movement makes your wedding portraits feel more genuine.
17. How will you use our wedding photos?
Your wedding photographer will probably want to use your photos for marketing purposes on social media, their website, and sometimes for prints or magazines. They will often have a clause in their contract making sure you are okay with them being used for advertising purposes for their business. If you aren’t comfortable you are always 100% allowed to say no to advertising on social media.
18. Will we receive digital files of our photos? When can we expect the final gallery to be delivered?
Most professional photographers like myself will deliver your photos in an online gallery but delivery time of your final gallery depends on the photographer. The average is 6-8 weeks for a full turn around of your wedding gallery. I always send over sneak peeks at maximum a week after your wedding day. The sneak peek usually includes 25-50 images for you to download and enjoy with your family while you are waiting for your final gallery.
Once your full gallery is delivered you can download all of your images to your phone and also your computer. I use Pixieset for delivery of my galleries because it is user friendly and allows you to order high quality prints through the gallery system.
19. What gear or equipment do you shoot with?
This is a fun question to ask your photographer if your a “tech geek”. We love talking about all of our expensive photography gear. I personally shoot with two full frame, double card slot, mirrorless Canon cameras. I also carry a 50mm lens, a 24-70mm, and various others, but those two are my favorites, along with my on camera flashes.
20. What is the coolest thing you have seen done at a wedding?
This is another fun question to ask a photographer because they may love sharing some fun ideas for you to add to your special day when planning. Personally I loved photographing an LGBTQ+ wedding when they brought color cannons and shot them off all at the same time, it’s one of my favorite images still!
These 20 questions to ask your wedding photographer should help you when narrowing down who you want to photograph your wedding day. Your wedding photographer is with you anywhere from 6-10 hours of your day. Make sure it’s someone you vibe well with and will capture your vision of your day to the fullest extent and support you throughout the planning process leading up to your wedding day, during, and after your wedding!
